PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal medium for a monitor and television set, which operates at a high temperature or an extremely low temperature based on an ECB effect or an IPS or FFS effect, and exhibits a behavior with a short response time and high reliability.SOLUTION: The liquid crystal medium has negative dielectric anisotropy and comprises at least one compound represented by formula I. The liquid crystal medium is to be used, particularly for an active matrix display based on a VA, PS-VA, PALC, FFS or IPS effect.
