High-temperature fuel batteries comprise a plurality of stacked cells, each provided by a series of metallic oxide layers which are, in order, a gas-tight electron-conducting outer layer 1, a porous electron-conducting fuel-feed layer 2, a gas-tight layer of stabilized zirconia electrolyte 3, a porous electron-conducting oxidant-feed layer 4, and a gas-tight electronconducting cell separation, or outer, layer 5; the layers of the stacked cells being firmly bonded together to form a coherent body, each porous layer being provided with a gas-feed pipe and a gas-exhaust pipe. As in Fig. 2, layers 1, 5 are (ZrO 2 ) 0 . 7 (Mn 2 O 3 ) 0 . 3 , layer 2 NiO + (ZrO 2 ) 0 . 9 (Y 2 O 3 ) 0 . 1 , layer 3 (ZrO 2 ) 0 . 9 - (Y 2 O 3 ) 0 . 1 and layer 4 Mn 2 O 3 . The fuel cell body is sealed laterally by a glass-coating (not shown) and the gas-pipes 6 to 9 which are of the same material as electrolyte layer 3 communicate with layers 2, 4 via appropriate apertures in the glass coating. Another embodiment (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) has integral gas-pipes and layers 2, 4 of the electrolyte material, (ZrO 2 )0<SP>.</SP>9- (Y 2 O 3 ) 0 . 1 , impregnated with CuO, which in layer 2 is reduced to Cu when operating, to provide an electron conducting layer.
