1,148,581. Fuel cells. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 20 June, 1966 [21 June, 1965], No. 27357/66. Heading H1B. A gas-tight tubular fuel cell stack of unitary construction is produced by (a) depositing a first electrode material in separate segments of discrete length on a mandrel, (b) depositing thereover corresponding segments of solid electrolyte material each such segment covering one end only of the first segment, and (c) similarly depositing thereover segments of electrode material. Figs. 1 to 3 show the progression through steps (a), (b) and (c) and Fig. 4 shows the stack after withdrawal of the mandrel 20. The structure may be heat treated and a non-conducting cover layer may be deposited over the joints between the outer electrodes. The electrolyte may be stabilized zirconia and the electrodes platinum or a porous metal oxide impregnated with silver (anode or cathode), lithiated nickel oxide (cathode) or an intimate dispersion in an oxygen ion-conducting material (anode). Either the fuel or the oxidant may be supplied through the hollow bore of the stack. Several stacks may be connected, e.g. in series, and they may be enclosed as described and claimed in Specification 1,145,918. |
