Chromanols for food and vitamin preparations

(A) Method for the prepn. of chromanols of the general formula (I) A = the group -CH2- - or n = 0-9 R1, R2 and R3 = hydrogen or methyl (B) Complexes V (see "Preparation") Used for food and vitamin preparations. 5.0 g. Trimethylhydroquinone were suspended in 50 ml. methylene chloride and 2.6 cc. nitro-methane. A weak stream of boron trifluoride gas was passed into the soln. while cooling with water. The suspension initially turns light green and white crystals begin to precipitate after 1 minute. Addition of boron trifluoride is stopped when saturation is reached and the mixture filtered off after stirring for 15 mins. The product is washed with methylene chloride and dried to give 5.98 g. of the boron trifluoride-trimethyl-hydroquinone complex, m.p. 116-118 deg.C.
