Creping process

A web is creped by passing it through a first passage of cross-sectional width corresp. to that of the web and then through a second passage of greater width and provided with means to frictionally engage and slow down the web, causing it to accumulate and crepe. The increase in width from the firs to the second passage is abrupt and the second passage converges to a point of minimum thickness along its length and then gradually diverges to the outlet. Appts. gives a high rate of operation with the minimum amount of distortion of the web.
