A carriage-shifting arrangement for a teleprinter or other terminal apparatus having a movable carriage. The shifting arrangement includes an actuating means controlled by a code combination for rendering a normally operative carriage shift mechanism inoperative and a normally inoperative carriage-tabulating mechanism including a series of tabulating stops operative, and for rendering at least one counter-stop operative to selectively individually contact the tabulating stops for selectively arresting the carriage.
