An electromagnetic controller utilises a minimum of energy to move a valve from one position to another. The moving member is returned automatically to its operating position when an external force such as a mechanical shock is applied. A valve (1) has an inlet (2) and outlet (3) through which flow is controlled by a valve (5) acting against a seat (4). The valve is attached to the shaft (6) which extends the core (7) of an electromagnet. This is operated by windings which create a magnetic field. One winding attracts the plunger when a switch (11) is made when the valve is in its rest position. The other winding maintains the valve in the open position but its effect is insufficient to open it on its own. Both windings are powered when a general control switch (13) is made. A coil spring (9) acts to close the valve.
