The invention relates to an overload protection device for a machine tool, especially a multi-stage press, having a carriage which is driven by means of a crank and a connecting rod, with interposition of a device which performs a triggering function in the event of an overload. To ensure that such an overload protection device can be used even when the space available is limited, the device which performs a triggering function in the event of an overload has a pivoted lever which is mounted on the carriage, supports a bearing, which is eccentric with respect to its pivot axis, for the connecting rod, and is supported via its free lever arm on one side by a prestressed spring or by a hydraulic cylinder with a pressure control device and on the other side by an abutment of the carriage.
