Monitoring method for staged load switching device

A staged electrical load switching device has main and auxiliary contacts with moving contacts that move between stages in sequence to change the output. During the changeover of contacts arcing occurs and high frequency noise is produced that is detected as a series of pulses. The timing between the pulses is determined and is used for comparison with stored values. If the time is less than the stored value a fault condition is signalled.
