The device has two functional parts (CP,PP), each providing the full functionality of an auxiliary device. A housing for enclosing both parts has an axis along which both parts are aligned. A drive shaft (6) which drives both parts extends along the housing axis and is rotatably mounted on the housing so that it is in working engagement with both functional parts. The first or second functional part can be a coolant compressor for an air-conditioning system or a generator.
