Shrink-on labels (2) which completely enclose a container (1), esp. a bottle, are formed away from the container (1) in a separate device (12). The required length of labelling material (13) is drawn from a supply and formed into a label and cut off from the supply. It is then slipped on the container (1) and fixed into place by shrinking.
