Electro=optical light shutter e.g. for printer

The electro-optical light shutter includes several shutter elements arranged to form at least one linear field using the electro-optical effect of each element, e.g. the Kerr effect. The light transparent material used for the elements is e.g. a sintered lanthanum (La) modified lead-zierconium titanate, known as PLZT ceramic. In combination with a polariser and an analyser this PLZT material has a controlled transparency. The light shutter field comprises a PLZT ceramic substrate which is provided with a central slot and a pair of lateral slots extending along both sides of the central slot. A row of shutter elements is provided between the central slot and a side slot. A second row of elements is arranged between the central slot and the other side slot. The common electrode of the system is formed by an electrically conductive film, e.g. of aluminium formed, e.g. by sputtering, and which covers the substrate surface provided with slots, except the surfaces of the shutter elements.
