A system and method for storing carbohydrate sequences in an organized database, which is preferably available to a plurality of users through a network such as the Internet. Optionally and preferably, the sequences can be searched and retrieved according to a similarity to a query sequence. In order to support such searches, the complex carbohydrate structures are preferably represented by a simple linear code, which is more preferably also able to represent branches within the carbohydrate structure.
