METHOD FOR MODIFYING POLYMERIC SURFACE USING THERMIONIC EMISSION

PURPOSE: A method for modifying a polymeric surface using thermionic emission is provided to modify the polymeric surface into a hydrophilic property or hydrophobic property by emitting ion particles having a certain amount of energy, thereby improving the convention method using an undue energy. CONSTITUTION: The method is carried out by placing a polymeric surface in a vacuum chamber kept at a high vacuum. Discharge gas is injected into an ion generating device to form ion particles and the ion particles are discharged as an ion beam through an ion gun by potential difference. Herein, a power source unit connected to the ion gun is adjusted so that the ion particles have energy of 0.01 to 100 keV. Simultaneously, by operating a coil disposed in the vacuum chamber, thermoelectrons are emitted into the vacuum chamber. As a result, the ion particles which are positive charged when being emitted from the ion generating device through the ion gun are neutralized by the thermoelectrons emitted from the coil and thus do not have a repulsive power. Since the ion particles are heavier than the electrons, the passages of the ion particles are not changed.
