PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper sheet conveyor of a paper sheet sorting machine that is compact and requires small place for setting it, and also can reduce the cost. SOLUTION: At the first conveying route R1, mail is conveyed upward one by one in the elongate standing state, and at the second conveying route R2, the mail is turned downward from horizontal direction, then conveyed in opposite horizontal direction, and an address recoded on the mail is read by bar code readers 21 and 22 on the way. At the third conveying route R3, the mail is conveyed upward again, then conveyed downward by the fourth conveying route R4, and sorted by sorting devices 26 and 27 on the way according to the each classification read by the bar code readers 21 and 22. Then, the mail is conveyed to a collecting device being made to stand from horizontal state by turning conveyors 28, 29 and 30 at the fifth conveying route R5.
