PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To change variously fuel spray shapes according to an operating condition of a direct fuel injection type engine. SOLUTION: There provided is a supermagnetostrictive element type injector which controls a rate of change (a rising gradient) in supply current applied to a solenoid for generating a magnetic field that displaces a supermagnetostrictive element or controls a peak value in response to an engine demand. In the supermagnetostrictive element type injector, the larger the rising gradient of the supply current to the solenoid, the faster the lifting velocity of a plunger to permit an spraying initial velocity to be faster, thus enabling penetration to be lengthened. Then, the smaller the gradient thereof, the slower the lifting velocity of the plunger to slow the spraying initial velocity, thus enabling the penetration to be shortened. Further, the higher the peak value of the supply current is rendered, the larger the lifting amount of the plunger can be rendered, to increase a fuel flow volume, thus enabling the spraying to be denser and hard to get crushed. Furthermore, the lower the peak value of the supply current, the smaller the fuel flow volume, enabling the spraying to decrease in density (the spraying easy to get crushed).
