PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a valve stopping mechanism capable of setting a cylinder operation state when hydraulic fluid pressure is low in starting an engine and having sufficient responsiveness for changing from a cylinder cut-off state to a cylinder operating state. SOLUTION: This engine is provided with: an intake valve and an exhaust valve; a first intake valve spring and a first exhaust valve spring energizing the intake and exhaust valves in a valve closing direction; a valve drive cam; the valve stopping mechanism selectively creating a valve operating state and a valve stop state based on cut-off hydraulic fluid pressure supplied from the outside and the energization of the plunger spring; and a cut-off hydraulic fluid pressure supply control section 80 controlling supply of cut-off hydraulic fluid pressure. The valve stop mechanism creates the operating state when the energizing force of the plunger spring is larger than push-pressing force of cut-off hydraulic fluid pressure, and creates the cut-off state when the push-pressing force of cut-off hydraulic fluid pressure is larger than the energizing force of the plunger spring.
