The method involves applying a free-flowing smoothing material on a surface for producing a smoothing layer. An edge insulation strip is applied on a surface in an edge area of a surface of a floor before applying the smoothing layer. An edge insulation strip (1) exhibits a flexible base strip (2) projecting from a side of a flexible edge strip (3) of the insulation strip. The base strip is provided with passage openings (6) and is over-coated with a liquid or paste-like substance. An independent claim is also included for an edge insulation strip for limiting a smoothing layer.
