The present invention relates to an apparatus and a method for preventing a collision. The collision preventing apparatus comprises: a communications module for receiving position information through communications with at least one other vehicle; a sensor module including a GPS for identifying a position of a user′s own vehicle; and a control unit for identifying a central node of an intersection existed in a road where the user′s own vehicle and the other vehicle drive based on pre-stored map data and positions of the user′s own vehicle and the other vehicle, and identifying a possibility of a collision between the user′s own vehicle and the other vehicle in the intersection to output a warning alarm according to the possibility of the collision. Other embodiments are also possible to apply.
