PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide: a carbon material for a secondary battery negative electrode, by which an adequate battery performance can be ensured because the increase in electric resistance during charge and discharge can be suppressed when it is used under a low-temperature environment; an active material for a secondary battery negative electrode, which includes such a carbon material for a secondary battery negative electrode; a secondary battery negative electrode arranged by use of such an active material for a secondary battery negative electrode; and a secondary battery arranged by use of such a secondary battery negative electrode.SOLUTION: A carbon material for a secondary battery negative electrode comprises: carbon particles of which the superficial area per unit volume, determined from a particle diameter distribution based on the number of particles, is within a range of 10000-16000 cm. An active material for a secondary battery negative electrode comprises: the carbon material for a secondary battery negative electrode. A secondary battery negative electrode (negative electrode 10) comprises: an active material layer for a secondary battery negative electrode (active material layer 12 for a negative electrode) including the active material for a secondary battery negative electrode; and a current collector (negative electrode current collector 14) for a negative electrode. A secondary battery (lithium ion secondary battery 100) comprises: the secondary battery negative electrode (negative electrode 10) of the present invention; an electrolytic layer 40; and a secondary battery positive electrode (positive electrode 20).SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
