An optical switching system particularly useful in optical networks where wavegu ides are required from one node to several others, to provide multiple paths in the event of an outage on a particular waveguide is provided. The switching system is a one side d switch having p ports and allows any of the p ports to be connected with any other of t he p-1 ports.
