PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high luminescent brightness with a small power consumption without decreasing a luminous efficiency in case of a sustained discharge, by establishing a sustained-discharge frequency during the last secondary sub- sustained-discharge period among sub-sustained-discharge periods as secondary sustained frequency which is lower than primary sustained-discharge frequency. SOLUTION: Sustained-discharge pulses are applied with a high frequency fH to both a common electrode and a scanning electrode at the beginning of a sustained-discharge period, and sustained-discharge pulses are applied with a low frequency fL (fL<fH) in the cycle of the sustained-discharge period. In this case, a generated frequency of the sustained discharge is the number of sustained-discharge pulses applied to a PDP cell per unit hour, so it becomes 2fH at the beginning of the sustained-discharge period and 2fL in the end. Therefore, it generates many times of sustained discharge in a short time as a high-frequency drive in case of small number of sustained discharge times, but it works as a low-frequency drive in the period when a luminosity saturation phenomenon appears after repeating hundreds of sustained discharge. The influence of luminosity saturation can be decreased thereby. |
