1,148,955. Modified zeolites. MOBIL OIL CORP. 17 May, 1967 [17 May, 1966], No. 22961/67. Heading C1A. [Also in Divisions Bland C5] Modified zeolites having a pore size less than 9Š and between the molecular diameters of propylene and propane, are obtained by including therein Pt, Pd, Os, Rh, Ni or Co (after formation, e.g. by ion exchange or impregnation, or during formation) and deactivating the surfaces (e.g. by poisoning the surface with an organic phosphorus compound (numerous compounds specified), by base exchanging the external metal ions with an ion too large to enter the interior such as a tetramethylammonium ion or by complexing the surface ions with EDTA or other agents). The resultant materials are catalytically active for the selective hydrogenation of ethylene in the presence of propylene (see Divisions B1 and C5). Specified zeolites are zeolite A, Barrer's species 5, mordenite, chabazite and gmelinite. In Ex. 4 sodium aluminate solution containing tetramine platinous chloride and sodium metasilicate were poured together into a vessel at room temperature to form a gel which was aged at about 100‹ C. to give a crystalline zeolite. By replacing hydrogen ions present in the zeolite by sodium ions, the pores are reduced to the desired size, and in addition the above mentioned metals may thus be " trapped " therein. |
