<p>1294756 Interlaced multifilament yarn; fluid jets HERCULES Inc 2 Dec 1970 [30 Dec 1969] 57361/70 Headings D1F and D1W A method of intertwining multifilament yarn comprises passing the yarn through a passage while maintaining it under tension, and intermittently introducing a fluid under pressure into said passage to create zones of turbulence therein, the fluid being intermittently introduced through conduit means directed towards the yarn passage axis under the control of a valve sleeve which rotates and periodically opens the conduit means. Apparatus for carrying out the method comprises a body member 10 having a yarn. passage 11 therethrough. Conduits 17, 18 and 20 open into the passage 11, the conduits being in opposed pairs spaced apart along the axis of the passage and the pairs being at right angles to each other. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, the body member 10 is surrounded by a rotatable valve sleeve 21 having ports 22 therein corresponding to the conduits 17, 18, 20. The sleeve 21 is rotated by means of a motor 30 via gears 32 and 31. Fluid under pressure is supplied to the passage 11 via a pipe 29, plenum chamber 26, ports 22 and conduits 17, 18 and 20, the rotation of the sleeve 21 causing the conduits 17, 18 and 20 to be opened and closed thereby causing intermittent flow of fluid to the passage 11. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 5, the body member 43 having yarn passage 46 and conduits 59, 60, 61 and 62 is. mounted on a support member 37. The support member 37 has a bore therethrough in which is located a rotatable valve member 72. The valve member 72 is provided with ports 78 communicating with a conduit 79 in the member 37 which conduit 79 communicates with the conduits 59, 60, 61 and 62 via internal conduits 63, 64, 66, 67, 68, 69, 70 and 71. Fluid under pressure is supplied to the valve member 72 which is rotated to provide intermittent flow of fluid to passage 46. A valve piston 80 may be slidable in the member 37 to open or close the conduit 79. In this embodiment, the body member 43 is provided with a slot 48 communicating with the passage 46 for laying in the yarn to be interlaced. The slot 48 is closable by means of a hinged member 52. The yarn may be composed of crimped filaments which are interlaced in a uniform pattern at substantially uniformly spaced apart sites. Two or more yarns may be combined to produce ply combinations. The method is advantageously carried out using synthetic filament yarns.</p> |
