The apparatus generates a series of pulses which can be used for switching, and the switch unit switch has in a common housing one or several light sources with different surface geometry which act as transmitters and there are one or more photosensitive elements with different surface geometry as which act as receivers. They are so arranged relative to each other that the light emitted by the light sources may be directed by the mechanically operated element (6) which is used as a mirror itself, as a diffused light to the receivers, thus generating switching pulses.
