Prepn. of new 1,2,4-triazole derivs. of formula (I) comprises cyclising and N-formyl-amidohydrazone of formula (II).In the formulae, R1 is lower alkyl, 1-adamantyl, or phenyl opt. substd. by halogen, lower alkyl or lower hydroxyalkyl; n=0, 1 or 2; Z is Oor S; X is O or S and Y is CH, or X is S or NR and Y is N; R is H, lower alkyl or lower hydroxyalkyl.(I) are useful as antiprotozoal agents (esp. active against Trichomonas app. and amoebae) and antibacterial agents. A typical cpd. is 3-(5-nitro-2-furylvinyl)-4-methylcarbamoyl-N'-formyl-5-nitro-2-fu- rylacrylamido-hydrazone.
