LAMP WITH SAFETY FEATURES

A lamp (10) incorporating one or more safety features for reducing the risk of fire or heat damage associated with improper operation of the lamp (10). One safety feature can be an automatic safety switch (20) for terminating power to the lamp (10) when the lamp (10) is not in a proper operational orientation. The switch (42) is mounted on the underside of the base (12) of the lamp (10) and only provides electricity to the lamp (10) when the weight of the lamp (10) rests properly on its base (12). A thermal switch (68) which reduces or eliminates power to the lamp (10) when the lamp (10) is operating above above a predetermined temperature can be provided, alone or in combination with a light level sensor (63) to adjust lamp power in response to room lighting conditions.
