A simple but accurate transportation of the video tape in both directions of movement without position changes and a simplified manufacturing process of the tape drive system is achieved in accordance with Figure 1 by the fact that the two capstan shafts (8, 18) driving the magnetic tape (27) in the forward or reverse direction of movement are connected with variable direction of rotation by at least one common belt (26). Each direction of tape movement is associated with different tape guide elements (3, 4, 11; 19, 22/6, 13; 15, 17, 23) and tape sensing elements (9; 20/10; 21) which are arranged on in each case one of two associated planes (A, B), which are inclined relative to one another, of an assembly plate whilst the head drum (25) is arranged on a third plane (C) inclined relative to the first (A) and second (B) plane. The invention results in an extension of the recording time of a reversible cassette and keeps down the component expenditure in the equipment, particularly due to the fact that the second drive shaft is not driven by an additional drive motor but by the first drive shaft via a common belt drive. <IMAGE>
