PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an extremely good optical characteristic changeover mechanism, being changeable without sacrificing a part of the optical characteristic, suitable for making it small by the simple constitution and having economical advantage, an optical head device and an optical disk device both being provided with the mechanism. SOLUTION: In an optical characteristic changeover mechanism for changing over the optical characteristic of an optical system by selectively feeding an optical element 43 in the optical path of the optical system, a holder 42 holding the optical element 43 is freely arranged both on a first position on which the optical element 43 is interposed in the optical path end on a second position on which the optical element 43 is not interposed in the optical path by rotating the holder by means of magnetic force.
