Two adjacent parts (13, 14, 22) of a mattress base are connected in each case by joints (15, 27, 28). Each joint (15, 27, 28) comprises two steel limbs (29) which are connected to one another pivotably by an axle (33) and are enclosed by a rubber jacket (37). In the lower region of the two steel limbs (29), the mutually facing surfaces of the rubber jacket are provided with intermeshing teeth (40). In the closed position of the joint (15), large vertical loads can thus also be transferred in long-term operation. Since the pivot axle region (31, 32, 33) is completely surrounded by the rubber jacket (37), virtually no functional sounds occur. Furthermore, the metal dust occurring due to the metal friction remains inside the rubber jacket. The closed position, in which vertical forces can be transmitted to a greater extent, can be selected by appropriate arrangement of the joints (15, 27, 28). Anatomical differences in physical builds (e.g. different leg length) are automatically taken into consideration by elastic adaptation. By virtue of the elastic suspension and the transfer of all the metal parts into the interior of the rubber body, damage to the bedlinen and accidents (finger injury due to trapping) are avoided to a great extent. <IMAGE>
