A heating boiler (10), which can be operated both with gas and with oil, has a combustion chamber (12) and smoke gas flues (14) adjoining it, both the combustion chamber (12) and the smoke gas flues (14) being formed by a spirally coiled hollow casing (15) which is in each case delimited by two walls (18) and is of hollow design in its interior. Provided at the outer end of the spirally coiled hollow casing (15) is a return run connection (17), through which water to be heated is introduced into the hollow casing (15). The water to be heated flows in counterflow to the smoke gases inside the smoke gas flues (14) into the interior of the spiral and emerges again there via the forward run connection (16). This means that an optimum utilisation of the heat energy of the smoke gases is made possible, as a temperature drop is always present during the total possible heat transmission from the smoke gases to the water to be heated. The manufacturing and material costs of the heating boiler are comparatively low as the essential components of the heating boiler (10), namely the combustion chamber (12) and the smoke gas flues (14), are formed by the hollow casing (15) which conducts the water to be heated. <IMAGE>
