PURPOSE:To reduce fogs of a profile line or the like by switching properly smoothing in horizontal, vertical and horizontal/vertical directions for a picture signal smoothing filter depending on the degree of local picture element change in the horizontal and vertical directions to prevent the effect of an original picture on the picture element change. CONSTITUTION:A subtractor and an absolute value arithmetic unit are added to a conventional filter. A subtractor 11b subtracts an output signal of a 1 sample delay element 2b from an input signal of a sample delay element 2a, its output signal is fed to an absolute value arithmetic unit 12b, from which a horizontal direction differential absolute value signal Eh. Similarly, a vertical direction difference absolute signal Ev is outputted from the subtractor 11b and the absolute value arithmetic unit 12b. The Eh, Ev are fed to a comparator 14. On the other hand, a horizontal smoothing signal Ph is obtained from a horizontal smoothing filter 7, a vertical smoothing signal Pv is obtained from a vertical smoothing filter, and a horizontal/vertical smoothing signal Phv is obtained from a horizontal/vertical smoothing filter 10. The Ph, Pv and Phv are inputted to a selector 15, selected by the command of the comparator 14 and outputted as an output signal F. |
