PURPOSE:To increase the recording density and to expand the error correction limit by adopting a multi-gap head for a rotary head and using the head to record plural digital data in one and the same track formed on a tape in parallel. CONSTITUTION:A recording and reproducing head 18 is constituted into two gaps having heads 19, 20. Each end of head coils 19a, 20a of the heads 19, 20 is connected to ground and other end is connected respectively to common contact points 21a, 22a of sound recording and reproducing changeover switches 21, 22. Separate digital data fed to input terminals 35, 36 are recorded in the same track of a magnetic tape 38 as track parts t1, t2 in parallel at the recording of the multi-mode and signals recorded in the track parts t1, t2 are reproduced separately at the reproduction. Digital data fed to the input terminals 35, 36 are recorded to the track parts t1, t2 at the recording of the high fidelity mode in parallel.
