PURPOSE:To improve the durability, wear resistance, weatherability, corrosion resistance, etc. of a medium by having a thin magnetic metallic film layer on a nonmagnetic substate and an org. metallic plasma-polymerized film thereon and further providing a plasma-polymerized top coat film contg. F or Si thereon. CONSTITUTION:This magnetic recording medium 1 has generally an underlying layer 3 on the nonmagnetic substrate 2 and has a nonmagnetic metallic intermediate layer 4 on the underlying layer 4. The thin magnetic metallic film layer 5 (magnetic layer), the org. metallic plasma-polymerized film 6, and if necessary a carbon protective film and further the plasma-polymerized top coat film 7 consisting of fluorine or silicon are successively provided thereon. The org. metallic plasma-polymerized film 6 is formed by mixing the discharge plasma of a carrier gas such as Ar, He, H2 or N2 and a gaseous org. metal or the gas generated when the org. metal is dissolved in an org. solvent and bringing such gaseous mixture into contact with the surface of the substrate to be treated. The medium having the excellent durability, wear resistance, weatherability, corrosion resistance, etc., is thus obtd.
