PURPOSE:To improve the durability, wear resistance, weatherability, corrosion resistance, etc. of a medium by consisting of a top coat film of a plasma- polymerized film which contains fluorine or carbon, fluorine and hydrogen and is specified in the carbon content in the film. CONSTITUTION:This magnetic recording medium 1 has generally an underlying layer 3, a nonmagnetic metallic intermediate layer 4, a thin magnetic metallic film layer 5, a nonmagnetic metallic protective film 6, a carbon protective film 7 and the top coat film 8 on a nonmagnetic substrate 2. The top coat film 8 is formed of the plasma-polymerized film. Said film is a thin film which contains the fluorine or the carbon, fluorine and hydrogen and is specified in the carbon content in the film to 30-80at%. The atomic ratio of the hydrogen/fluorine in the top coat film 8 is specified to 0-1, more preferably 0-0.9. The medium having the excellent durability, wear resistance, weatherability, corrosion resistance, etc., is thus obtd.
