PURPOSE: To automatically pick up a load by use of a carrier having a control means by providing a main frame and a sub-frame with a power-driven suspension means which moves a load carrier means vertically between a raised position and a lowered position in relation to operations. CONSTITUTION: During a load pickup operation, a suspension driving motor 46 is energized and moves a load carrying arm 40 to a lowered position, an object detector 61 is inactivated, a carrier driving motor 23 is started, and a carrier 14 advances on a load 36 located on a supporting surface 42 and held in the relation of being aligned with a carrier track 12 along time direction of an end by a guide 76. In the lowered position, a pad 44 at the free end of the arm 40 moves under the load 36 into an opposite relation to the side thereof. When both ends of the load 36 are detected simultaneously by a pair of pickups 70, 71 or 72, a controller 56 is programmed in response to this condition to energize the motor 46 to move the arm 40 to a raised position and to activate the detector 61 to move the load 36 to a destination by means of the motor 23.
