The appliance has a tool holder (1) and an adjustment and measuring appliance (2) which has optical and electronic components to monitor the tool. The device has coordinate cross-wires (4) for positioning the tool cutting edge (3), and an image processing computer (7) which operates a display (9). The adjustment and monitoring appliance and the tool holder can move, and can be adjusted relative to each other in at least two coordinate planes. The computer acts in conjunction with a camera (6). In addition to the cross-wires, the display has markings (10,11) which indicate the displacement of the tool cutting edge from the cross-wires, and any required adjustment of tool holder and/or the monitoring appliance.
