An ultra-short pulse generating laser system has a passive nonlinear laser mode phase coupler (11) and a prism-free dispersion compensator. A laser system for producing ultra-short light pulses has a laser resonator containing an active solid state oscillator element (preferably a thin disc of a laser-active crystal of a quasi-three level system such as Yb:YAG), a laser mode phase coupling device (1, 11) in the form of a passive nonlinear element and a prism-free dispersion compensation device.
