The diesel engine controller provides the means (5-7) to inject a supplementary quantity of fuel into selected cylinders of the engine (1), after the principal injection of fuel has taken place and during the expansion phase of the engine cycle. This provokes a supplementary combustion and increases the thermo-kinetic energy of the exhaust gas to improve the performance of the turbocharger.
