Controlling the release of a combustible mixture of fuel and air in a combustion chamber of a system of a direct fuel injected engine comprises injecting the fuel into the combustion chamber during the compression stroke to create a air-fuel charge; igniting the charge close to the end of the stroke to produce combustion gases during the subsequent combustion stroke; flushing the fuel vapor canister and releasing the flushed vapor to the suction manifold so that unburned hydrocarbons in the vapor are added to the fuel/air mixture in the charge; and releasing the combustion gases through the valve into the outlet valve system. An Independent claim is also included for a combustion engine system comprising a fuel injector for injecting the fuel into the combustion chamber during the compression stroke; a fuel tank connected via a fuel line to the injector; a fuel vapor canister connected via a vapor flushing line to the tank and the suction manifold; a catalyst system containing oxidation catalysts to oxidize the exhaust gas emissions; and a vapor flushing valve for controlling the fuel vapors from the canister.
