A catalyst for the production of alkylene oxides which comprises a carrier and metallic silver fine particles supported on the carrier, wherein at least 90% of the metallic silver fine particles have particle diameters of 2 to 100nm; a process for the production of the catalyst which comprises impregnating a carrier with a fluid containing a silver compound or silver ions, drying the impregnated carrier, and irradiating the resulting impregnated carrier with microwave to form metallic silver fine particle in a state dispersed on the carrier; and use of the catalyst in producing olefin oxides by catalytic gas-phase oxidation of olefins with molecular oxygen containing gas.
