The invention relates to a computer vision system and method for the detection of anomalous objects (pedestrians or animals) on roads or motorways. The invention relates to a system comprising a digital camera (1) which supplies images to a CPU (2) that uses a moving-object detector (3) which transmits information relating to the objects present in each frame to an object-tracking module (4), said module identifying the trajectories and speeds of the objects present in each frame and supplying said information to an anomaly detector (5) which categorises the objects as normal or anomalous and which, alternatively, transmits the information relating to anomalous objects to a communications module (6) that can be used to obtain information about the objects. The invention also relates to a method for the detection of said anomalous objects, comprising the steps of capturing images, detecting objects, tracking objects and detecting anomalous objects.
