The present invention relates to a mobile terminal including a flexible display unit, and a method for controlling the same. The mobile terminal according to an embodiment of the present invention comprises: a sensing unit which senses identification information corresponding to a user based on a hand gesture of the user who grasps a mobile terminal; a flexible display unit which outputs screen information corresponding to an external device connected to the mobile terminal wherein the shape of the flexible display unit is deformed based on the sensed identification information; and a control unit which generates a control signal for controlling the external device and transmits the generated control signal to the external device based on a touch input applied to the output screen information. Provided is an advantage in that a mobile terminal can be operated as a device for controlling a remote control, a mouse, etc.
