摘要 Embodiments of the present invention comprise altering the biosynthesis and accumulation of sucrose in legumes by transforming the plants with the sucrose phosphate synthase (SPS) gene of maize, and closely related regulatory genes. Embodiments of the present invention further comprise altering the assimilation of nitrogen in legumes by transforming the plants with the glutamine synthetase (GS) gene of soybean, and closely related regulatory genes. Embodiments of the present invention further comprise transforming legume plants with both SPS and GS genes. In addition, embodiments of the present invention relate to enhancing expression of transgenes through the 5′ UTR of the glycine max (soybean) cytosolic glutamine synthetase (Gmglnβ1) gene.

A method of producing an improved leguminous plant, plant cell or plant part with enhanced nitrogen use efficiency, and reduced flowering as compared to a corresponding non transformed leguminous wild type plant, plant cell or plant part comprising: transforming a plurality of leguminous plants, plant cells or plant parts with an expressible nucleic acid sequence encoding the sucrose phosphate synthase (SPS) gene of maize, wherein the nucleic acid shares at least 95% sequence identity with SEQ ID NO: 1; and selecting from the transformed leguminous plants, plant cells or plant parts a leguminous plant, plant cell or plant part having increased nitrogen use efficiency, and reduced flowering as compared to a corresponding non transformed leguminous wild type plant, plant cell or plant part.
