A moulded article comprises a layer of thermosetting plastics material with a glass fibre mat bonded in a surface thereof and is made by contacting a surface of the thermosetting moulding compound with glass fibre mat and subjecting the compound and mat to sufficient heat and pressure to cure the compound and bond the mat in its surface. The thermosetting moulding compound comprises 10-60 wt. per cent thermosetting resin, 15-80 wt. per cent finely divided filler and 2-40 wt. per cent of a fibre reinforcement and the glass fibre mat is a continuous strand glass fibre mat or one in which the fibres are chemically bonded to prevent substantial relative movement; the mat having a weight of ¢ to 3 oz. per sq. ft. A glass fibre mat may be bonded into both faces of the resin layer. The article is preferably made by placing a glass fibre mat in a mould, covering it with resin, compressing and heating. Suitable thermosetting plastics, fillers and polymers are listed.</p> |
