[Also in Division C2] Acyclic or cyclic diolefins, or compounds containing one ring double bond and one side chain double bond (referred to as semi-cyclic diolefins), are disproportionated by contact with a homogeneous catalyst comprising a hydrocarbon-soluble, four co-ordinate, square planar, co-ordinatively unsaturated d<SP>6</SP>, d<SP>8</SP> or d<SP>10</SP> transition metal complex of formula in which L is phosphorus or arsenic, R is lower alkyl or mononuclear aryl, X is Cl, Br or I, M is a Group VIII transition metal, q is 2, 3 or 4, r is 0, 1 or 2, and s is the valency of M (which may be zero). Numerous such catalysts are specified. In some eases simultaneous isomerization of the feed may take place. Examples describe (1) and (5) conversion of 1,4-cyclohexadiene to benzene, cyclohexene and conjugated cyclohexadienes; (2) conversion of 1- methyl - 1,4 - cyclohexadiene to corresponding products; (3) conversion of 4-vinyl-cyclohexene-1 to ethylbenzene, ethylcyclohexene and ethylidene cyclohexenes; and (4) conversion of a mixture of cis- and trans-1,4-hexadienes to hexene, hexatrienes and conjugated hexadienes. |
