The compression mechanism has a frame covering the dustbin mount and a hinging lid mounted in the frame and of complementary shape. The frame (1) and the lide (2) are of concae shape and fit closely together, so that a space is formed when the lid is opened, to accommodate extra rubbish. This is compressed in the bin when the lid is moved into the shut position in the frame. A locking device can be provided to hold the lid shut, keeping the rubbish under compression until it is opened again. There can also be a catch on the lid, engaging with a lug on the frame to hold the lid open when desired.
