PURPOSE:To obtain an original reader having a stable original lighting light source with high efficiency by stimulating a fluorescent substance by gaseous low pressure xenon discharge as a light source and using a cool cathode discharge lamp. CONSTITUTION:Electrodes 16a, 16b are arranged in the inside of both ends of a glass tube 15 whose tube diameter is nearly 4.8mm, lead wires are connected to the electrodes 16a, 16b and the leads are led externally through a seal part. A gaseous xenon (Xe) projecting the ultraviolet ray of nearly 148nm in wavelength at the operation is sealed in the inside of the glass tube 15 at a low pressure ranging nearly 10 - nearly 300Torr. Further, a fluorescent material 17 generating a green light emitting the ultraviolet ray is coated to the inner wall of the glass tube 15 and a start auxiliary electrode 18 to lower the discharge start voltage is provided at the outer wall of the glass tube 15. The start auxiliary electrode 18 is made of a thin and long conductive layer formed in the longitudinal direction of the glass tube 15.
