The invention relates to a device and a method of piercing open gas cartridges. In order to ensure targeted penetration of the piercer into the cartridge wall and to empty the gas cartridge in an operationally safe manner it is proposed, according to the invention, that the gas cartridge be brought up to a piercer located in a cartridge chamber by means of a pressure plate actuable by a hydraulic cylinder, pierced and separated again from the piercer by the pressure plate. The pressure plate has a carrier which can be brought into interlocking connection with the gas cartridge. According to the method, the pressure plate and the cartridge are first brought up to the piercer, and the cartridge wall is then pierced in a quick, abrupt movement. <IMAGE>
