PURPOSE:To prepare a carbon black excellent in the abrasion resistance, grip and processability by specifying the specific surface area by nitrogen adsorption, DBP adsorption, modal diameter of agglomerates, and iodine adsorption. CONSTITUTION:A carbon black exhibiting the following characteristics: a specific surface area by nitrogen adsorption (N2SA) or 150-180m<2>/g; a DBP adsorption(DBP) of 125-ml/100g; a modal diameter(Dgt) of carbon black agglomerates by centrifugal sedimentation of 70nm or lower; a ratio (N2SA/IA) of the specific surface area by nitrogen adsorption to an iodine adsorption (IA, mg/g) of 0.85-0.98; and a difference ( DBP) between the DBP adsorption (DBP, ml/100g) and a compressed DBP adsorption (CDBP, ml/100g) or 20 or lower. A tire tread using a rubber compsn. contg. 100 pts.wt. synthetic or natural rubber and 20-100 pts.wt. said carbon black is excellent in the abrasion resistance, resistance to uneven abrasion, and grip.
